The Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) is an emission/reflection nebula in the constellation Auriga, illuminated mainly by the hot runaway star AE Aurigae. About 1,500 light‑years away, it is a mix of red hydrogen emission (from ionized gas) and blue reflection (starlight scattered dust), which gives it the “flaming” appearance in photographs. It spans a few light‑years and shows filaments, bright rims and dust lanes sculpted by the star’s radiation and winds.
